Use 2FA with an authenticator app

You can use an authenticator app for two-factor authentication (2FA) to secure your Digistore24 account. This is an app to prove (authenticate) your identity.

To do this, install the app on your smartphone or tablet and connect it to your Digistore24 account via a QR code. After this, the app will generate a new 2FA code for your Digistore24 account every few seconds. To log into Digistore24, simply enter your regular password and then enter the 2FA code from the app.

More about the authenticator app

Digistore24 uses a 2FA standard for time-based one-time passwords, for which there are authenticator apps from various providers. You can also use these apps for most other web services that support 2FA.

Note that Digistore24 uses the 2FA standard, but does not develop it. The best way to get help for the app you are using is to visit the website of the app manufacturer. You can find much information about 2FA on the internet, as more and more web services offer this security measure.

We recommend the Google Authenticator for iPhone/iPad or Android. It's easy to use and you can start using it right after downloading it. (You can find help on the Google support page.)

You can also use other authenticator apps:

  • For Android, search for "Authenticator" in the Google Play Store.
  • For iPhone/iPad, search for "Authenticator" in the Apple App Store.
Tip

The security level of this method is incredibly high. However, it does require you to always have access to your smartphone or tablet. To ensure that you don't lose access to your 2FA codes if you lose your device, you can export them to other devices once you've set them up. To do this, check the settings of your authenticator app.

Proceed as follows:

  1. Install an authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet if you don't already have one. The app requires access rights to your device's camera.
  2. Log into your Digistore24 account and go to Account > Details.
  3. Set up 2FA under Account details in the Two-factor authentication field:
    • Click on Set up now if you haven't set up a 2FA access yet.
    • Click on Change in the Primary field if you have already set up a 2FA access and want to change it.
    • Click on Set up now in the Backup field if you have already set up a 2FA access and want to add a second one as a backup.
    • Click on Change in the Backup field if you have already set up a second 2FA access and want to change it.
      Attention

      Use different devices for Primary and Backup so that you can continue to log in if you lose a device.

  4. Select the Authenticator app option. Below you will see the QR code for your Digistore24 account.
    Attention

    The QR code is a secret key for your Digistore24 account. It works even if it is photographed and scanned from the photo. Please make sure that no unauthorized person can point a camera at it.

  5. Open the authenticator app on your smartphone or tablet and the QR code scanner in it.
  6. Point the QR code scanner at the QR code of your Digistore24 account. Immediately, a new Digistore24 entry will be created in your authenticator app for your Digistore24 ID, with a 2FA access code:

  7. Scroll down to the bottom in Digistore24 and enter your Digistore24 password in the Current password field.
  8. Click on Continue. The Authenticator app entry form is now displayed.
  9. Enter the current 2FA code from your authenticator app and click on Finish setup. Activation is now complete and confirmation will now be displayed in Digistore24.
  10. From now on, after logging in with your password, you will see a window for further login with a 2FA code from the authenticator app.

    Note
    If you have set up this 2FA access as a backup, click on Use backup device in the login window.

  11. You also have the option to enable Trust this device for 7 days. During this period, you will not be asked for a 2FA code again.
