How can I offer products for free?
If you want to offer a product for free, you should not create it on Digistore24, as no payment is made via Digistore24. If, however, a customer of your free product later buys a paid product from your range, you can still reward the responsible affiliates. One option is to create a content link through which the cookie is set. To do this, create a content page with an associated content link: Digibiz24.
Create content link
This is how you create a content link:
- Go to the vendor view at Account > Content pages.
- Click on the Create content page button.
- Enter a name for your content page under Name.
- Enter the link to your other sales page under Target URL.
- Select the associated product under For the product.
- Select the option Request approval now under Approval so that the content links can be used by your affiliates.
- When you click the Save button, your special content link/promolink will be created, which leads to the respective sales page.
Another option is to include a promocode on the landing page. To do this, insert the following shortcode in a place where you would also use normal text or HTML codes. [digistore_promolink url=http://www.myblog.com/#aff=AFFILIATE]
Embed promocode
This is how you embed the promocode on the landing page:
- Create a landing page on your website with an opt-in form or a download area for the free product. Your affiliates will then drive traffic to this page for the free product.
- Add a promocode to the landing page. This is a piece of program code that ensures that a promo cookie is set for the visitor and that your affiliates receive their commission later. You have two options for entering the promocode.
- For WordPress: If you created your landing page on WordPress, you should only install the Digistore24 plugin. Then add the downloaded file to your WordPress account under Plugins > Install > Upload plugin. Make sure the plugin is activated.
Note
In some cases, some poorly programmed WordPress plugins may interfere with our plugin. For this reason, we cannot accept any responsibility for the functionality of the promocode. Be sure to test whether the promocode works on your website, especially if you have installed or updated WordPress plugins. If the promocode does not work, your affiliates will not be pleased. In this case, it is much safer to use a Digistore24 content link as described above. - With HTML code: If you are using a conventional website without WordPress, we offer you an HTML code to enable you to insert the promocode. Insert the following code (from start to end inclusive) in the header of your HTML document, for example, directly before *-head-*.
- For WordPress: If you created your landing page on WordPress, you should only install the Digistore24 plugin. Then add the downloaded file to your WordPress account under Plugins > Install > Upload plugin. Make sure the plugin is activated.
If this is not possible, place the code as high up on the page as possible.
<script src=”https://www.digistore24.com/service/digistore.js”></script> <script type=’text/javascript’> digistorePromocode( “PRODUCT_ID” ); </script>
- Make sure that you replace the placeholder PRODUCT_ID with the ID of your product. A partnership should exist so that your affiliates receive their commission. Either enter this separately for each affiliate or follow the instructions in the next point. If you have more than one product, select a product ID and also follow the instructions in the next point.
- To ensure that the commissions of purchased products are successfully assigned later, please ensure that the option Automatically accept partnerships is activated for all products in the product details (this is the case by default). If you use an HTML code and have only entered one product ID, this procedure will also apply. Without this option, you would have to ensure that every affiliate has a partnership for every product you offer. This is possible, but cumbersome. You can find the option Automatically accept partnerships in the Properties tab by going to Account > Products in the vendor view and clicking on the pencil icon for the relevant products.
- To prevent fraud, the domain of your website should be registered with Digistore24. In the vendor view, click on Account > Products and the ⁝- symbol and then on Promolink & affiliate invitation link for any product. Now scroll down and enter your landing page under Promocode domains. The affiliates then link to your website by adding #aff=AFFILIATE to the URL. The placeholder AFFILIATE must be replaced by the Digistore24 ID of the affiliate.
Example:
http://www.myblog.com/ #aff=AFFILIATE. If your affiliates would also like to track your campaigns, they use the following addition: #aff=AFFILIATE&cam=CAMPAIGNKEY
You can make this information available to your affiliates in your advertising media. If you use an affiliate support page on WordPress and have already installed the Digistore24 plugin, you can provide your affiliates with the link to your landing page using the Digistore24 promolink generator. To do this, insert the following shortcode in a place where you would also use normal text or HTML codes. Replace myblog.com with your own domain. Your affiliates will be provided with a promolink generator in which you only need to enter your ID and then copy out the link. If a customer buys a product from you within 180 days, the affiliate who sent you the customer for the free product will receive their commission in accordance with the last-cookie-wins principle.

Can customers cancel an installment payment?
When paying in installments, the customer gets access to their product immediately after making the payment. Installment payments are generally not cancellable after the cancellation period (which you specify under Settings > Return policy) has expired. If you want to specify that an installment payment can be canceled, you can do so in the product details in the Payment plans tab when setting up the installment payment.
What is the difference between a temporary subscription and installment payments?
If you create a payment plan with an installment payment, you should specify the type of your installment payment in the Rebilling type dropdown. We distinguish between two main types:
- Installment (not cancellable*)
- Temporary subscription (cancellable/not cancellable*)
*Non-cancellable means that it cannot be canceled after the return period has expired. By installment, we mean a split payment that takes place at regular intervals over a longer period of time. However, the service of the product to which the payment relates is performed at a single point in time. For example, if a television is sold as an installment payment, the service is the sale of the television. This sale takes place at a single point in time and does not occur over several days/months/years. Generally, an installment is a particularly high amount that is difficult to afford all at once, such as an expensive seminar. However, a temporary subscription describes a service that is provided at certain intervals or over a longer period of several months or even years, but is limited in time, unlike a regular subscription. Like an installment, there are regular payments, but the services are not provided at a single point in time, but over several months or years. Unlike the TV example above, a temporary subscription is, for example, an annual coaching program that is limited to two years, for which you pay monthly.
Subscription | Temporary subscription | Installment | |
Temporary? | No | Yes | Yes |
Regular payments? | Yes | Yes | Yes |
Payment period | Until the subscription is canceled | Several months/years | Several months/years |
Service period | Service is provided over several months/years | Service is provided over several months/years | Service is provided at a single point in time |
Why do we differentiate between a temporary subscription and an installment?
Practically speaking, the distinction between a temporary subscription and an installment is irrelevant to you as a vendor. Either way, your customer pays a certain amount each month. So why do we differentiate between the two payment methods? The essential difference is that with an installment payment, VAT for the full amount should be paid immediately upon the first payment, even if the full amount has not yet been received. This is for tax accounting reasons. For example, if a seminar costs €1000, the customer is to pay 10 installments (each €100) and the VAT is 19%, Digistore24 should pay €190 VAT to the tax office upon the first payment. However, if a customer does not pay an installment, you will be refunded the VAT for the missing amounts after a maximum of 180 days. See also Taxing installments and subscriptions.
