A return policy defines two things: which products it applies to, and until when your customers may return those products.
You can create several return policies – for example a general one for all products and a specific one for a single product.
Attention
The return period you set for your products does not apply to subscription products. The minimum term setting is the decisive factor for the cancellation of subscription products. If you sell subscriptions, check the minimum term on the product.
Which return periods can you choose?
That depends on the reseller you sell through.
| Reseller | Possible return periods |
| Digistore24 GmbH | 14, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days |
| Digistore24 LTD | 14, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days |
| Digistore24 MSLW Ltd | 14, 30, 60, 90, and 180 days |
| Digistore24 Inc. | 60, 90, and 180 days |
The legal withdrawal period is the minimum. You cannot set shorter periods.
There is one exception for digital content, software, services, and seminars: the 0-day return policy. For this you need an additional user right (that is: an activation in your account).
How it works
- You create a new return policy and give it a name.
- You select which products it applies to.
- You set the return period.
- You decide what happens with outstanding payments and cancellations.
- You save the policy.
1. Create the return policy
- Click on My products → Return policies in the vendor view.
- Click on the button Create return policy.
- Enter a Name. Only you can see the name.
- In the Active field, select whether the policy should be active immediately after saving.
2. Assign products
- In the Products field, select which products the policy applies to.
- Enter a number in the Order field. The more specific the policy, the smaller the number. A policy for a single product gets 7, for example, and a policy for all products gets 999.
What is the order for?
A product can match several return policies. The order decides which one applies.
Digistore24 checks your return policies from the smallest number to the largest. The first policy that matches the main product applies. Digistore24 does not check any further after that.
What does this mean for you? Give specific policies small numbers and general policies large numbers. Otherwise your general policy overrides all special cases.
3. Set the return period
- Select the return period in the Refund regulation field. You only see periods that are permitted for your reseller and your products.
- In the Enter advanced returns for events field, select whether you also need a fixed end date.
Result: If you select yes, the Refund possible at least until field appears. - Enter a date there. Regardless of the return period, returns are possible until this date. The date can only extend the return period, never shorten it.
- In the Allow return policy to B2B customers field, select whether business customers get the same return period as private customers. The default is no.
Note
The 30-day and 60-day return policies correspond to one and two months respectively. All other periods are counted exact to the day.
4. Set up payments and cancellation
- In the Reminder procedure allowed field, select whether Digistore24 should initiate a reminder procedure in case of non-payment.
- In the Show button for rebilling cancellation on the order confirmation page field, select whether customers may cancel their ongoing payments themselves. If you select yes, a link appears on the order confirmation page – provided cancellation is possible for that order.
- Enter a sum in the Tolerance for advance payments field. Up to this sum, an order counts as paid even if less than the full purchase price arrives.
Note
The tolerance helps with transfers from abroad. Banks there often deduct fees, so a few euros are missing.
5. Save the policy
- Click on the button Save.
Result: The policy appears in your list under Return policies.
You have created a return policy! It applies to new orders for the products you selected – provided you set Active to yes.
Special cases
Does the return policy also apply to business customers?
Not by default. Business customers (that is: buyers who order commercially, B2B for short) have no statutory right of withdrawal under EU consumer law. That is why Digistore24 excludes them from your return policy.
What does this mean for you? A business customer cannot return the product – not even if you set 30 days for private customers.
Solution: Set the Allow return policy to B2B customers field to yes. Business customers then get the same return period as private customers. The setting applies to the whole return policy, so to every product you assign it to.
Note
The setting only takes effect for orders processed through the German and Irish resellers.
Can you waive the right of return entirely?
In exceptional cases, yes. For digital content, software, services, and seminars there is the 0-day return policy. Once you have met your contractual obligations, a customer can no longer return a product with this policy.
You can only set the 0-day return policy once you have the required user right. Without this right, the option does not appear in the Refund regulation field at all. You can request it after your product has been approved.
When does the return period start and end?
The return period begins when the first payment is made.
Once the period has expired, a return is no longer possible – unless you have entered a date under Refund possible at least until.
